Beginning Tai Chi classes will meet on Thursdays from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. beginning January 7 and on Saturdays from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM beginning February 6. People of all ages can learn the slow, gentle, continuous movements of Taoist Tai Chi, and it can be adapted to match any level of ability.

Taoist Tai Chi (taijiquan) is a centuries old exercise that promotes health and reverses the effects of ageing. While most of us think of tai chi as an exercise for able-bodied adults, the benefits to those with health challenges are substantial. Physicians studying this ancient art have reported improved balance, stronger bones and lowered blood pressure. It helps a wide range of chronic ailments, and in some cases improves short-term memory, sleep habits, and reduces stress. Those suffering from debilitating disease and injury receive great benefit.

Beginning Tai Chi Classes

Time: 6:00pm - 7:30pm

Location: Rose Center

The Taoist Tai Chi Society of Tennessee is offering two new beginner classes at the Rose Center in Morristown starting in January. A four-week Introduction to Tai Chi class will meet on Saturdays from 10:30 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. starting January 9. Beginning Tai Chi classes will meet on Thursdays from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. beginning January 7 and on Saturdays from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM beginning February 6. The courses will each continue to meet every week until the entire set of 108 tai chi moves is learned, usually about four months. A Continuing Class is held on Saturday mornings from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM for those who have completed a beginning class. Members of the Society pay a one-time $20 registration fee and a monthly donation of $30, $20 for seniors or $50 for families. The exercises can be performed in any comfortable clothing. Shoes that offer good support and balance, such as comfortable walking shoes or sneakers are required, but there are no special uniforms.

Introduction To Digital Photography Class

Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Location: Rose Center

A four-week Digital Photography Class for beginners starts on Thursday, April 8, at the Rose Center in downtown Morristown. Classes are from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. each week. Both novice photographers and those changing to digital from film are welcome. The fee is $60 and pre-registration is required. Call 423-581-4330 to register or for more information. Ron Plasencia, a forty year veteran of photography, is the instructor.

Digital cameras which are capable of being manually adjusted to control exposure are the most desirable for the course. However, technique and composition instruction will also apply for fully automatic cameras.

Although the basics of camera use apply to both film and digital photography, technological advances in digital cameras warrants a course which focuses on: white balance, histograms, automatic picture modes, metering options, focusing options, and more.

For the first class, students will need to bring their own camera with its user manual, paper for notetaking and three photos. Photo assignments will be given at each class and photos will be discussed and critiqued.

Zumba Fitness Class

Time: 6:00pm -

Location: Rose Center

As a former contestant on NBC’s “The biggest Loser” (Season 2), Ryan Smith-Kelley certainly knows what it feels like to struggle with her weight (she has lost almost 100 pounds). Following the show, she was crowned Mrs. TN United States 2006 and competed in the Mrs. United States pageant. While she was excited to be part of such a prestigious event, she found that it only added to her already existing insecurities about her body and weight. It was not long after that period that she began to resort back to some of her former ways. Because of this, she knew that she was going to have to find something different and out-of-the-ordinary if she planned to stay conditioned and in shape. She began to seek out new ways to exercise other than the traditional gym experience that had grown monotonous for her. That’s when she was introduced to a new exercise craze called Zumba - a high-energy Latin dance aerobic class that required no previous dance training. Before long, the enjoyment she found in her experience began to carry over into her conversations with friends. When she realized that not many people had heard about it, but wanted to participate, she decided to obtain her Zumba instructor’s license. That then encouraged her to go even further and obtain her personal trainer’s license with Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA), as well as her CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certifications. She now hopes that her love and passion for genuinely having a good time while exercising will be a contagious experience for her community. She will begin teaching Zumba and small group personal training sessions at Rose Center.

The classes will be held on Thursday evenings beginning on March 18. The Zumba classes will be held twice on Thursday evenings. One will start at 6:00 P.M. and the next class will begin at 8:00 P.M. The cost is discounted to $75 for 10 classes if you pre-register with payment by March 11. Walk-ins will be welcome at a fee of $10 per class.

You must pre-register to reserve a spot in her small group (capped off at ten people) boot camp personal training sessions to be held on Thursday evenings at 7:00 P.M. The class is for more discreet individuals who prefer a little additional one-on-one instruction and attention. The fee for small group personal training sessions is $200 for ten sessions.

To pre-register or reserve your spot for any of these classes or personal training sessions, call Rose Center at 423-581-4330 or Ryan Kelley at 423-523-2303 or email her at kelleyryan78@hotmail.com.

Beginning Watercolor Class

Time: 6:00pm - 9:00pm

Location: Rose Center

Rose Center is pleased to offer a new Watercolor class for adults and mature teens. Beginning to advanced watercolor students will benefit from this class. Jim Palmer will teach this four-session class on Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. beginning on January 14. The fee is $75. A second session will be offered beginning on April 1.

This will be a technique-based class providing students with the basics to get started in watercolor painting. Students will learn about the brushes, paint and paper; using brush strokes; creating texture; how to make clouds, trees, houses, water, rocks and more. Subjects such as balance, value, perspective, and color theory will also be discussed.

Palmer says about the course: “This class is all about having fun when painting. There is no intimidation and fellow classmates are eager to encourage your work. If we are not having fun and ridding ourselves of stress and frustration, then we are going at this the wrong way. This kind of art should be fun.” Pre registration is required. Class size will be limited to allow plenty of one-on-one time. A supply list will be provided upon registration.
